Makeup Trends: Lips

Over the past few weeks, Bella’s styling experts have divulged their insider tips and tricks to selecting and using professional styling tools.  Now it’s our makeup artists’ turn to clue you in on what’s hot just in time for those holiday parties.

Bella Expert: Gloria

Lips

Without a doubt, the red lip is one of the biggest trends on today’s makeup scene.  However, one of the greatest challenges people have is selecting the best shade for their skin tone.  With only two main options, an orange-based warm red or a blue/pink-based cool red, you’d think this would be a simple task.  However the choices are seemingly endless, so Bella expert Gloria has come to the rescue to clear up all the confusion.

Though the information below will help take the guess work out of choosing the most harmonious shade for you, don’t be scared to experiment with the opposite of what is recommended.  Contrasting lipstick shades can look stunning and are guaranteed to make a statement.

Very Fair Skin with Cool Undertones: Pink or blue-based red
Fair Skin with Cool Undertones: True cherry red
Fair Skin with Warm Undertones: Warm reds
Sun-kissed Medium Skin: Sheer reds
Olive Skin: Smoldering classic red
Deep Olive Skin: Sheer, glossy red with gold flecks
Brown Skin with Cool Undertones: Cool, blue-based red
Brown Skin with Warm Undertones: Deeper reds that have both blue and brown in them – not too much of either
Dark Skin with Cool Undertones: Dramatic, yet classic blue-based hues
Dark Skin with Warm Undertones: Warm reds and sheer red glosses

Makeup Trends: Eyes

Over the past few weeks, Bella’s styling experts have divulged their insider tips and tricks to selecting and using professional styling tools.  Now it’s our makeup artists’ turn to clue you in on what’s hot just in time for those holiday parties.

Bella Expert: Amanda

Eyes

Current trends are steering away from the traditional smoky eye and incorporating more metallics and vibrant pops of color into the palette.  Metallics have long been a popular choice for eyeshadow, but are now an increasingly trendy choice for eyeliner.  The pops of color being seen most are intensely pigmented purples, blues and greens.  For those looking for even more drama, add a splash of glitter to the lid or liner or create a thicker, winged effect with eyeliner.

Tips and tricks:
  • When applying a vibrant pop of color, be sure to keep the rest of the look more neutral.  For example, combine a bright liner with a neutral shadow and a bright shadow with a neutral liner.
  • Build up a thick liner very slowly – this will give you more control of the end result.
  • Start small if you’re a little intimidated by bright colors – a colored liner is a great place to begin.
  • When creating a winged effect at the outer corners, close your eye, hold the corner of your eye and draw a straight line.  Don’t try to wing liner out; instead, build the line up higher with each stroke.  When the lid is released, the illusion of a wing appears.

A Lesson on Professional Styling Tools: Brushes and Clips

Has the overwhelming variety of styling tools out there left you feeling confused?  If so, look no further.

Over the next few weeks, we will sit down with Bella’s styling experts to set the record straight on the benefits of using professional tools, as well as how to properly use them.

Bella Expert: Rebecca

What is it? Professional Brushes and Clips

What do they do?  Ease the process of achieving desired look

What are the benefits?
  • Clips allow you to style hair one section at a time to avoid being overwhelmed
  • Croc hair clips are especially user friendly and hold a lot of hair in each clip
  • High-quality construction
  • Product satisfaction guarantee (when purchased through Bella)

**Tips and Tricks**

By having your stylist recommend the correct tools and how to use them, you won’t waste time and money on brushes and clips that don’t fit your needs.  Selecting the correct brush size for the length of your hair and the style you want to achieve is crucial.
  1. Paddle brushes are great for quickly rough drying the hair.
  2. Boar bristle round brushes give smoothness to coarse, unruly hair.
  3. Ceramic round brushes conduct more heat, almost acting as a curling iron, which allows you to achieve more body.
  4. To achieve maximum volume and body, set hair on the brush and allow it to cool before removing.
  5. Clean brushes regularly with shampoo/soap and water to remove product buildup.
  6. When using clips, move section by section around the head.

A Lesson on Professional Styling Tools: Curling Iron and Wand

Has the overwhelming variety of styling tools out there left you feeling confused?  If so, look no further.

Over the next few weeks, we will sit down with Bella’s styling experts to set the record straight on the benefits of using professional tools, as well as how to properly use them.

Bella Expert: Tania

What is it?  Professional Curling Iron and Wand

What does it do?  Variety of styles from loose waves to tight curls

What are the benefits?
  • Multiple temperature settings for different hair textures
  • Heats up quickly (this allows for quick styling with minimal damage due to reduced time heat is in contact with the hair – the rule of thumb is to count to ten, then release the section)
  • Iron: clamp allows hair to be easily secured
  • Wand: lack of a clamp makes it extra user-friendly

**Tips and Tricks**

Iron:

The ideal barrel size for creating loose, modern waves is 1 ½” – larger and smaller barrels can be used depending on length of hair and desired tightness of the curl.  Fine-haired gals should infuse a bit of texture into their hair prior to curling.  To achieve this, apply Redken Wool Shake to damp hair before blow-drying.   When you’re ready to curl, part hair down the middle and apply Redken Quick Tease (fine textures) or Redken Hot Sets (normal to coarse textures) throughout hair.  Taking vertical sections that start closest to the face, begin curling hair away from the face.  Work your way to the back center of the head and repeat on the other side.

Wand:

The same preparation products can be used when styling hair with a wand.  Hold the wand horizontally in one hand and wrap each section of hair around it with the other hand, leaving the ends out -- take care not to burn yourself.  Wands are not intended to curl all the way to the end, but rather to create a looser wave.

A Lesson on Professional Styling Tools: Flat Iron

Has the overwhelming variety of styling tools out there left you feeling confused?  If so, look no further.

Over the next few weeks, we will sit down with Bella’s styling experts to set the record straight on the benefits of using professional tools, as well as how to properly use them.

Bella Expert: Katie

What is it?  1” Professional Ceramic Flat Iron

What does it do? Versatile, will curl or straighten hair

Which features should I look for?
  • Temperature control dial for use on various hair textures
  • Ceramic plates which will seal in moisture, repel humidity, reduce frizz and help eliminate static
  • Automatic shutoff

**Tips and Tricks**

To Straighten:

Apply a smoothing heat protectant like Phytolisse Serum or Phytokeratine Spray to dry hair.  Section hair into 3 to 4 horizontal sections, depending on density and texture.  Starting at the bottom or nape area, smooth hair from roots to ends, slightly beveling the iron as you go.  Hot Tip:  For extra sleekness and shine, use a boar bristle flat brush instead of a comb to flat iron.

To Curl:

Apply a lighter weight heat protectant like Phyto 7 or Phyto 9 to dry hair.  Section hair into larger sections for bouncier, looser curls or smaller sections for smaller, tighter curls.  Clamp the iron closed and turn it back on itself a half turn.  Slowly move it down the hair shaft to the end of the hair.  Finish the style with Sebastian Shaper Hairspray.

A Lesson on Professional Styling Tools: Hair Dryer

Has the overwhelming variety of styling tools out there left you feeling confused?  If so, look no further.

Over the next few weeks, we will sit down with Bella’s styling experts to set the record straight on the benefits of using professional tools, as well as how to properly use them.

Bella Expert: Abby

What is it?  Hair Dryer

What does it do?  Reduces drying time resulting in healthier, shinier hair

What are the benefits?
  • Powerful
  • Multiple switch combinations for a variety of speed and temperature settings
  • Concentrator nozzle
  • Cold shot to set styles
  • 1-year warranty

**Tips and Tricks**

Rule #1:  ALWAYS apply product to damp hair before blow-drying.  If you don’t like the feel of product in your hair, apply a serum or leave-in conditioner for heat protection like Redken Satinwear.  For added volume and control, layer with Redken Aerate.  Section hair into at least 3 major sections – you can always divide these further depending on the density of the hair.

Handle with Care: A Guide to 365 Days of Great Hair - Graying and/or Aging

Washing

Cooler weather calls for a warmer coat. If you’re trying to grow hair thicker and fuller, Redken Intraforce Shampoo and Toner will get you on the right track. Anyone can use this product and it comes in two formulas: color-treated and natural.

At Home

The must-have accompaniment to your shampoo and toner is Redken Intraforce Scalp Treatment, designed to increase blood flow and energize the scalp. Optional products to enhance results are Micro Boost, which targets areas of greater hair loss, and Hair Advance, an intensive treatment used for 10 days, 3-4 times per year.

In Salon

Thicker, fuller, healthier hair begins with a healthy scalp. Ask your stylist for Redken’s Anti- Thinning Scalp Stimulate Service at your next visit. This service uses microdermabrasion to deeply cleanse and accelerate cellular turnover.

Handle with Care: A Guide to 365 Days of Great Hair - Thin or Thick

Washing

Depending on density, a seasonal decrease in moisture can leave hair either thirsty or flat. For additional hydration, try Phytojoba Shampoo and Phytobaume HydrationFor volume, try Phytovolume Shampoo and Phytobaume Volume. You can also mix and match these four products depending on the specific needs of your hair.

At Home

For added volume or control, apply Phyto Volume Mousse to damp hair prior to styling. This lightweight product provides maximum density and medium hold, while moisturizing and protecting your hair. For additional static control, apply Phyto 7 or Phyto 9 to damp or dry hair as needed.

In Salon

To purify your scalp from summer abuse, try a Phytopolleine treatment at your next appointment. The botanical blend will rebalance and restore healthy scalp conditions. If you’re in need of a moisture infusion, try a Phyto Huile d’Ales treatment. This moisturizes the scalp and revitalizes hair, restoring softness, suppleness, and shine to dehydrated strands.

Handle with Care: A Guide to 365 Days of Great Hair - Curly or Straight

Washing

Changing temperatures often cause our skin to react in unwelcomed ways. Add Phytoapaisant Shampoo to your routine as either a treatment or everyday shampoo. This shampoo delivers light moisture, reduces skin’s reactivity and restores skin comfort.

At Home

It’s time to take down those ponytails and buns we love during the hot summer months and start styling our hair again. Phytokeratine spray protects and repairs hair when applied to damp or dry hair before heat styling.

In Salon

Hair needs a boost of strength after summer stress leaves it fragile. Ask your stylist for a Phyto Subtil Elixir treatment at your next appointment. This treatment delivers a replenishing dose of protein and restores softness and shine.

Handle with Care: A Guide to 365 Days of Great Hair - Dry or Oily

Washing

As summer fun comes to an end, now’s the time to repair and prepare your hair for the fall. Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner strengthen and repair while preventing additional damage. This duo is great for all hair types and works to reverse all those hours spent in the sun and surf.

At Home

Adding a conditioning treatment like Pureology’s Hydra Whip to your at home regimen will both repair and hydrate hair. For best results, use this once a week. To combat static due to decreased humidity, apply Moroccan Oil Hairspray to dry hair after styling.

In Salon

At your next appointment, ask your stylist for a custom blended Redken Chemistry Extreme/All Soft Shot. This really packs a punch as it simultaneously delivers protein and moisture to the hair. This treatment is also affordable and time effective.
