Lips

Without a doubt, the red lip is one of the biggest trends on today’s makeup scene.  However, one of the greatest challenges people have is selecting the best shade for their skin tone.  With only two main options, an orange-based warm red or a blue/pink-based cool red, you’d think this would be a simple task.  However the choices are seemingly endless, so Bella expert Gloria has come to the rescue to clear up all the confusion.

Makeup Trends: Eyes

Over the past few weeks, Bella’s styling experts have divulged their insider tips and tricks to selecting and using professional styling tools.  Now it’s our makeup artists’ turn to clue you in on what’s hot just in time for those holiday parties.

Eyes

Current trends are steering away from the traditional smoky eye and incorporating more metallics and vibrant pops of color into the palette.  Metallics have long been a popular choice for eyeshadow, but are now an increasingly trendy choice for eyeliner.  The pops of color being seen most are intensely pigmented purples, blues and greens.  For those looking for even more drama, add a splash of glitter to the lid or liner or create a thicker, winged effect with eyeliner.

Tips and tricks:
  • When applying a vibrant pop of color, be sure to keep the rest of the look more neutral.  For example, combine a bright liner with a neutral shadow and a bright shadow with a neutral liner.
  • Build up a thick liner very slowly – this will give you more control of the end result.
  • Start small if you’re a little intimidated by bright colors – a colored liner is a great place to begin.
  • When creating a winged effect at the outer corners, close your eye, hold the corner of your eye and draw a straight line.  Don’t try to wing liner out; instead, build the line up higher with each stroke.  When the lid is released, the illusion of a wing appears.

A Lesson on Professional Styling Tools: Brushes and Clips

Has the overwhelming variety of styling tools out there left you feeling confused?  If so, look no further.

Over the next few weeks, we will sit down with Bella’s styling experts to set the record straight on the benefits of using professional tools, as well as how to properly use them.

Bella Expert: Rebecca

What is it? Professional Brushes and Clips

What do they do?  Ease the process of achieving desired look

What are the benefits?
  • Clips allow you to style hair one section at a time to avoid being overwhelmed
  • Croc hair clips are especially user friendly and hold a lot of hair in each clip
  • High-quality construction
  • Product satisfaction guarantee (when purchased through Bella)

**Tips and Tricks**

By having your stylist recommend the correct tools and how to use them, you won’t waste time and money on brushes and clips that don’t fit your needs.  Selecting the correct brush size for the length of your hair and the style you want to achieve is crucial.
  1. Paddle brushes are great for quickly rough drying the hair.
  2. Boar bristle round brushes give smoothness to coarse, unruly hair.
  3. Ceramic round brushes conduct more heat, almost acting as a curling iron, which allows you to achieve more body.
  4. To achieve maximum volume and body, set hair on the brush and allow it to cool before removing.
  5. Clean brushes regularly with shampoo/soap and water to remove product buildup.
  6. When using clips, move section by section around the head.

A Lesson on Professional Styling Tools: Curling Iron and Wand

Has the overwhelming variety of styling tools out there left you feeling confused?  If so, look no further.

Over the next few weeks, we will sit down with Bella’s styling experts to set the record straight on the benefits of using professional tools, as well as how to properly use them.

Bella Expert: Tania

What is it?  Professional Curling Iron and Wand

What does it do?  Variety of styles from loose waves to tight curls

What are the benefits?
  • Multiple temperature settings for different hair textures
  • Heats up quickly (this allows for quick styling with minimal damage due to reduced time heat is in contact with the hair – the rule of thumb is to count to ten, then release the section)
  • Iron: clamp allows hair to be easily secured
  • Wand: lack of a clamp makes it extra user-friendly

**Tips and Tricks**

Iron:

The ideal barrel size for creating loose, modern waves is 1 ½” – larger and smaller barrels can be used depending on length of hair and desired tightness of the curl.  Fine-haired gals should infuse a bit of texture into their hair prior to curling.  To achieve this, apply Redken Wool Shake to damp hair before blow-drying.   When you’re ready to curl, part hair down the middle and apply Redken Quick Tease (fine textures) or Redken Hot Sets (normal to coarse textures) throughout hair.  Taking vertical sections that start closest to the face, begin curling hair away from the face.  Work your way to the back center of the head and repeat on the other side.

Wand:

The same preparation products can be used when styling hair with a wand.  Hold the wand horizontally in one hand and wrap each section of hair around it with the other hand, leaving the ends out -- take care not to burn yourself.  Wands are not intended to curl all the way to the end, but rather to create a looser wave.
